Step by step
- Complete the 320-hour course. Train at a licensed school under a student permit.
- Wait for eligibility. After your training is complete, TDLR verifies your eligibility and PSI emails scheduling instructions.
- Apply and pay before the written exam. Apply online (preferred) and pay $50. Applying before the written exam is required if you want a temporary license.
- Pass both exams and the background check. Pass the written and the practical exams. With the application already in, a temporary license valid for 60 days prints after the practical.

Before you apply
- Criminal history. TDLR runs a background check on every applicant. With any conviction other than a minor traffic offence, or a guilty or no-contest plea with deferred adjudication, include the Criminal History Questionnaire. Reviews take one to six weeks. You can ask TDLR in advance whether a conviction would bar you, through a criminal history evaluation letter.
- Lawful presence. TDLR may ask for proof of lawful presence in the United States. Send documents only if it asks. What TDLR accepts.
