Do Texas barbers need continuing education to renew?

Yes. TDLR requires a total of 4 hours of department-approved continuing education every two years to renew a barber or cosmetology licence, made up of one hour of sanitation, two hours of barber or cosmetology related content and one hour of human trafficking prevention. Barbers who have held the licence for 15 years or more complete the sanitation and human trafficking hours only.

How often does a Texas Class A Barber licence renew?

Every two years, on the expiration date shown on the licence record. Continuing education has to be completed and reported before the renewal can be finished.

I hold a barber and a cosmetology licence. Do I need double the hours?

No. Continuing education taken for one of them satisfies the requirement for the other, although each licence is still renewed separately.

Can I take the same CE course twice?

No. TDLR does not grant continuing education credit for attending the same course more than once, and only courses from approved providers count. One hour of continuing education equals 50 minutes of instruction.

Renewing a Texas barber licence

Barber renewals now run on the same continuing education rules as cosmetology: four hours every two years, with two of them fixed by subject. If you renewed a few years ago without taking a course, this is what changed.

The short version

Cycle: every two years, on the expiration date on your licence record.
Continuing education: 4 hours total from a TDLR-approved provider: 1 hour of sanitation, 2 hours of barber or cosmetology related content and 1 hour of human trafficking prevention.
Licensed 15 years or more: the sanitation and human trafficking hours only.
Where: through your TDLR online account, once the provider has reported your hours.
Since 1 May 2026: TDLR may ask selected applicants for documents establishing lawful presence before it renews a licence.

What changed, and why it catches barbers out

Barbering and cosmetology are run as one programme at TDLR, and the continuing education requirements for both were restructured on 1 September 2025 into the four-hour package described above, with the reduced tier for people who have held the licence 15 years or more.

For barbers this lands differently than for cosmetologists, because course work has not always been part of a barber renewal. If your last renewal went through without any continuing education, that is the reason, and it does not mean you can skip it this time. Check what your current renewal asks for before you assume it is the same as the last one.

Step by step

Check your expiration date and how long you have held the licence, because the 15-year mark changes how many hours you owe.
Take the hours with a TDLR-approved provider. Courses from providers that are not approved do not count, and repeating a course you already took does not add hours.
Wait for the provider to report the hours. Reporting is the provider's job, not yours. If nothing shows in your TDLR account after about a week, contact the provider first.
Complete the renewal in TDLR online services and pay the fee.
Keep the certificate and the payment confirmation.

If you hold both licences

Continuing education completed for a barber licence satisfies a cosmetology licence and the other way round, so one course covers both. Each licence is still renewed on its own date and with its own fee. Providers note that the reduced 15-year tier is worked out licence by licence, so if one of the two has not reached fifteen years you may still owe the full four hours. If you are in that situation, confirm it with TDLR before you buy a shorter course.

If the licence already expired

Working on an expired barber licence is not allowed and carries penalties. Late renewal is possible for a period, with a fee that rises the longer the licence has been expired, and after three years the licence cannot be renewed at all: a new application under the current requirements is the only route. Confirm current fees and tiers with TDLR before paying.

Questions

Do the hours have to be in person?

No. Approved providers offer the course online, and TDLR's provider list shows which ones do.

What counts as the two elective hours?

Barber or cosmetology related content from an approved provider. The sanitation and human trafficking hours are fixed and cannot be swapped for other subjects.

How long does reporting take?

Usually a few days. The hours have to be on file before the renewal can be completed, so leave margin rather than taking the course on the last day.

Does a barber shop licence need continuing education?

The continuing education requirement belongs to the individual practitioner licence. Shop and establishment licences renew on their own terms; check what your specific licence asks for in your TDLR account.
