HVAC contractors in Austin, ranked by the permits they actually pulled
Between September 2025 and September 2026, 379 companies filed 6,304 air conditioning permits in Austin, Texas, and 94 percent of them were full system replacements rather than new construction. Every company below is ranked by that record and checked against the Texas licence file, so nobody can pay to move up.
Early release. Fourteen of the 379 companies on record are published so far; the rest are being checked before they go live.

The Austin air conditioning market in numbers
379 companies filed 6,304 air conditioning permits with the City of Austin between 2 September 2025 and 17 September 2026. The five busiest filed 2,721 of them, or 43 percent of all the work in the city, and 353 of the 379 match a current Texas contractor licence.
Volume is seasonal and sharply so. July produced 813 permits against 294 in February, a difference of 2.8 times, which is why a replacement planned between March and May gets better crew availability than the same job ordered in August.
94 percent of the permits are change-outs, meaning replacement of a complete existing system rather than new construction. Austin is a replacement market, not a growth one.

What the terms on this page mean
- Class A air conditioning licence
- A Texas licence with no cap on system capacity. Roughly half the contractors in Austin hold one, so it is useful information rather than a mark of rarity: it matters if your system is unusually large, and not much otherwise.
- Class B air conditioning licence
- A Texas licence limited to systems up to 25 tons of cooling or 1.5 million BTU per hour of heating. That covers every ordinary house in Austin comfortably, so a Class B contractor is fully qualified for a home replacement.
- Mechanical permit
- The permit Austin requires before a system is installed or replaced, filed by the contractor and not by you. It names the company, which is what makes the city record a public account of who did the work and where.
- Change-out
- Replacement of a complete existing system rather than new installation. Change-outs are 94 percent of Austin's air conditioning permits, which is why permit volume tracks replacement capacity rather than new construction.
Method and provenance
Ranking comes from one input: the count of air conditioning permits each company filed with the City of Austin in the trailing twelve months. Permits are matched to the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation file of licensed air conditioning contractors, republished daily, to show class, licence number and expiry.
Permit records cover installation and replacement. Service, maintenance and most duct work need no permit, so a service-led company appears smaller here than its revenue suggests. Companies whose name does not match the licence file are listed without a badge, because Texas licences are frequently registered under an owner's personal name. Absence of a badge is not a finding of unlicensed work.
Nothing on this page can be bought. Sponsored placements, when they exist, sit outside the ranking and are labelled as sponsored.

Questions
How do I check whether an HVAC contractor in Austin is licensed?
Texas requires an air conditioning contractor licence from TDLR. Search the company name in the TDLR licence database, or use the licence number shown on its profile here. Licences are often registered under the owner's personal name rather than the trading name, so a failed name search is not by itself proof that a company is unlicensed.
Does a contractor need a permit to replace an air conditioning system in Austin?
Yes. A full system replacement needs a mechanical permit from the city, filed by the licensed contractor and not by you. A contractor who offers to skip it leaves the work unrecorded and uninspected, which becomes your problem when you sell the house.
What does a high permit count tell me about a contractor?
That the company is busy, works inside the permit system and has crews available in August. It measures nothing about workmanship, pricing or how a warranty claim is handled, which is what references are for.
When is the best time of year to replace an air conditioner in Austin?
Between March and May. July runs 2.8 times heavier than February, so a summer quote comes from crews that are already booked out. A planned replacement in spring gets better availability and more attention.
Why is my contractor not on this list?
Repairs, maintenance and most duct work need no permit, so a company built around service rather than replacement may have filed nothing in twelve months. The list measures replacement work, not the whole trade.
How many HVAC permits are filed in Austin each year?
6,304 between September 2025 and September 2026, filed by 379 companies across 45 ZIP codes. Roughly 94 percent were full system replacements.
