How to read this table

Where does "Renews" come from?

From the data, not from a rulebook. For each license type we compare the licenses that are active with the ones that expire in the next twelve months. When nearly all of them expire within a year, the license renews annually; when about half do, it runs on a two-year term. Types that fit neither pattern are marked irregular, and types with fewer than 20 active licenses are too small to read a pattern from. It is a reliable guide, but your own license record shows your exact date.

Where do the CE requirements come from?

From each program's continuing education page on the TDLR website, checked on 8 October 2026 and linked in the last column. Where TDLR does not list a program in its continuing education index, the table says so rather than guessing. Hours must be taken from TDLR-approved providers, and rules change: confirm yours before you pay for a course.

What about fees?

Fees differ by license type and change more often than the rules, so we link to each program's official page, where the current fee schedule lives, rather than copying amounts that could go stale.

How many license types does TDLR issue?

The public TDLR license file contains 82 license types, from cosmetology operators and apprentice electricians to boiler inspectors and auctioneers. 739,394 licenses were active in the file dated 20 September 2026.

Which TDLR licenses renew every year?

Electrician, air conditioning and refrigeration, tow truck operator, auctioneer and elevator licenses renew every year. Cosmetology and barber licenses, their establishments and property tax consultants renew every two years. 52 of the 82 types follow an annual pattern in the data.

Which TDLR licenses need continuing education to renew?

Barbers and cosmetologists (4 hours every 2 years), individual electricians (4 hours a year), A/C contractors (8 hours a year), tow truck operators (4 hours per cycle), auctioneers, property tax consultants and professionals, water well drillers and elevator responsible parties. Contractor business licenses in the electrical trade and A/C technicians do not.
