How do I look up a Texas boiler?

Boilers are registered, inspected and issued certificates of operation separately from licences. TDLR keeps them in its Boiler Data Search, where a boiler can be found by boiler number, national board number, location or inspection organisation. Searching the licence database instead returns boiler inspectors, which is a different thing.

Where are Texas elevator inspection reports?

TDLR runs separate searches for elevators and related equipment and for elevator inspection reports, both listed on its verification page, apart from the licence search that covers elevator contractors and inspectors.

Can I check whether a licence holder has been penalised?

Yes. TDLR publishes penalties and administrative orders in a separate search, so a licence that appears active in the licence database may still have enforcement history recorded elsewhere.

Q: Is there one search for everything TDLR regulates?

No. The licence search covers people and businesses that hold a licence. Equipment such as boilers and elevators, tow companies and vehicle storage facilities, architectural barrier projects and disciplinary orders each have their own separate search on the TDLR website.

TDLR does not have one database. It has a licence search plus a handful of separate searches for equipment, companies and enforcement records, and the one you need depends on whether you are looking for a person, a business, a machine or a record. This page maps them.

The mistake almost everyone makes

Searching the licence database for a boiler, an elevator or a tow yard returns the wrong kind of result, and it looks like the record does not exist.

The licence database holds people and businesses: the boiler inspector, the elevator contractor, the tow operator. The equipment itself, along with its certificates and inspection history, lives in a different system. Both are public, but they do not talk to each other, and the names are close enough that it is easy to end up in the wrong one.

Boilers

Heating boilers, power boilers, unfired steam boilers, process steam generators and nuclear boilers must be registered with TDLR, hold current certificates of operation and be inspected regularly. The certificate belongs to the boiler, not to a person.

So there are two different questions and two different searches. Who is allowed to inspect a boiler is a licence question: TDLR commissions boiler inspectors, and private authorised inspection agencies employ authorised inspectors who perform certificate inspections. Whether a particular boiler is certified is an equipment question, answered in the Boiler Data Search by boiler number, national board number, location or inspection organisation.

Elevators and escalators

Same split. Contractors and inspectors are licence holders; the elevator itself and its inspection reports are in their own searches, both reachable from the TDLR verification page. If you manage a building and need the last inspection on a unit, the equipment search is the one you want.

Tow trucks and vehicle storage facilities

Operators are individually licensed and appear in the licence search. Tow companies and vehicle storage facilities are licensed as businesses and are found through the tow company and VSF search. If your car was towed, the company and the storage facility are the records that matter.

Enforcement records

A licence can be current and still carry a history. Penalties and administrative orders are published separately, so checking a licence as active is not the same as checking that nothing has happened.

What this site adds

We do not duplicate those searches, and for an individual record TDLR is always the official source. What is not on the TDLR website is the shape of the whole system: how many licences of each type exist, where they are concentrated and when they come up for renewal. That is what we publish, free to reuse with attribution.

Questions

Why does the licence search not find my boiler?

Because a boiler is not a licence. It is registered equipment with its own certificate of operation, and it lives in the Boiler Data Search.

Is any of this data downloadable?

TDLR publishes the licence file daily, and our compiled statistics are available as a CSV under CC BY 4.0. Equipment searches are consulted one record at a time on the TDLR site.

How current are these records?

TDLR's own searches are the live system. Our statistics come from the licence file dated 20 September 2026 and are refreshed periodically, so treat them as a snapshot.
