Step by step
- Complete the 750-hour course. Train at a barbering or cosmetology school licensed in Texas.
- Apply when eligible for the written exam. Apply and pay the $50 fee after you receive eligibility notice and before you sit the written exam, so a temporary license can print when you pass.
- Pass the written and practical exams. PSI emails scheduling instructions once TDLR verifies your eligibility.
- Receive your license. Passing both exams produces a temporary license valid for 60 days while the two-year license is mailed.
The two combination licenses
| License | Combined course | Or separately |
|---|---|---|
| Manicurist/Esthetician | 800 hours | 750 esthetician + 600 manicurist |
| Hair Weaving Specialist/Esthetician | 800 hours | 750 esthetician + 300 hair weaving |
If you already hold both individual licenses and they are active, you can upgrade to the combination license by mail for the $50 fee.
