# The Texas boiler examination

Boiler inspectors commissioned in Texas sit the TX Boiler Examination after TDLR approves their application. Only about 20 people take it each year, and in fiscal year 2025 fewer than half passed.

## The eight topic areas

TDLR lists the exam's subject areas as definitions, boiler types, inspections, boiler identification, boiler installation, materials and equipment, repair requirements, and safety. The [inspection intervals](</blog/texas-boiler-inspection-intervals>), [exemptions](</blog/texas-boiler-exemptions>) and [installation requirements](</blog/new-boiler-installation-report-texas>) on this site summarize several of them from the statute and rules.

## Eligibility

Apply to TDLR first (forms on the [boiler forms page](<https://www.tdlr.texas.gov/boilers/blrforms.htm>)). Once approved, PSI emails your eligibility, which lasts one year. Inspectors must also work for TDLR or an authorized inspection agency to hold a commission; see [who can inspect a boiler](</blog/who-can-inspect-a-boiler-in-texas>).

## Scheduling and exam day

  * **Eligibility first.** TDLR reviews your application, then PSI emails you that you are eligible and how to book. You cannot book before that.
  * **Booking.** Online through your PSI account, or by phone; your name must match your government ID exactly.
  * **On the day.** PSI's TDLR bulletins ask you to arrive 30 minutes early with one valid government photo ID; late arrivals are turned away and lose the fee.
  * **Cancelling.** Cancel or reschedule at least two days ahead through PSI, or the fee is forfeited.
  * **Results.** Scores are given at the test center. PSI gives failing candidates a diagnostic report by topic, which is the best study guide for a retake.
